Biomaterials 2024/2025

Biomaterials are materials of natural or synthetic origin used to replace, improve or treat a tissue or function in the body, making it easier for patients to heal after injuries or illnesses.
Some examples are hip replacements, contact lenses, pacemakers, vascular prostheses and catheters.
The images in this collection were provided by the Advanced Graphene Biomaterials group at i3S.
This research group aims to develop new biomaterials with better performance, i.e. more resistant to infections and the formation of clots, to help improve the quality of life and/or save the lives of the millions of patients around the world who use these devices.

Originals *

  • Biomaterial modified poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) used to prevent the formation of clots and infections in medical devices such as catheters.

  • Vascular prosthesis with electrodes that generate energy with the passage of blood with the intention of detecting prosthesis failure/cardiac arrest

  • Biomaterial polymer polycaprolactone with graphene oxide used to regenerate body tissues

  • Biomaterial degradable poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) reinforced with graphene oxide used to replace occluded heart arteries after a heart attack
